Excel consultancy – what is it?

What do I mean by Excel consultancy?

Here are some examples of financial modelling and Excel consultancy work I’ve done in the last six months;

  • Building management accounts models for charities, using downloads from systems such as Xero and Sage to create customised charity reports
  • Creating a tool to calculate retail revenue with a variety of different inputs
  • Building full three statement models for forecasting
  • Half day reviews of existing models and suggestions for improvements
  • Creating a more automated partial recovery VAT calculator using power query and customised reports in Xero.

If you have a spreadsheet you’ve outgrown, I’d be really happy to take a look at it and suggest what (if any) improvements can be made.  And I work with Googlesheets too!

How I work with you.

After an initial free call, I usually suggest a half day scoping and recommendation session.

This gives me time to explore your current spreadsheets and processes and understand in detail what you want to achieve and what your pain points are.

I’ll then write some recommendations, possibly with some mock-ups of solutions. I’ll also give a quote for any further work.

There is no obligation to continue working with me after the initial half day – perhaps that’s all you need to give you some ideas, or to confirm your thoughts.

Sometimes, when I’ve reviewed your situation, I might suggest that a spreadsheet ISN’T the solution. I have no interest in selling you further spreadsheet consultancy if it’s not what you need to solve your problem.

So it’s a really low risk, low cost way for you to start working with me.

How much does Excel consultancy cost?

I charge £350 per half day (£300 for charities) for my spreadsheet consultancy services. Sometimes half a day is all that’s needed. Here are some ballpark figures for what a fully built solution might cost based on previous work:

  • quick calculators – eg for payroll, sales etc – £350-£700
  • management accounts models (simple budget structure) – £1,500 – £2,000
  • a full three statement model with a number of variables – £2,500 – £5,000

Why choose me for Excel consultancy

I bring my years of experience from all levels of finance into my Excel consultancy work. I’m not just an Excel geek, I’m an experienced finance director, which means I know the right questions to ask.

I’ve worked in various sectors, from tourism and hospitality to the charity sector.

I think about typical users and what mistakes might occur when updating or modifying something I’ve built, and I build in error checks and instructions from the start.

I charge by the half day and offer a reduced rate to charities and not for profits. And I never charge more than I’ve quoted.
